Local people to make decisions on how funding will transform town and village centres, save local facilities and build pride in their local area.
Residents across Conwy will be able to save treasured pubs or clean up eyesores in their area through the Pride in Place programme, launched by the Prime Minister today.
Alongside this investment, there will be a revolutionary new approach to delivering the money, with communities in Conwy calling the shots on where and how money is spent to clean up their communities and revitalise their high streets.
This money will empower local people to tackle the issues that are blighting their communities – whether that’s cleaning up graffiti or tackling anti-social behaviour – as well as funding to help support community cohesion.
Conwy County Borough Council will be invited to propose the communities to participate in the Pride in Place Programme for UK Government approval.
This will be an inclusive process where the local authority will engage with local stakeholders to ensure local fit and alignment with existing schemes such as placemaking plans and the Transforming Towns initiative.
Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens said:
“The UK Government is laser-focused on delivering economic growth and providing opportunity for all and the Pride in Place programme is a key part of us doing that.
“More than £200 million of new direct investment will see improvements made to communities up and down Wales making them even greater places to live and work. We want to work with all our partners to make improvements that matter to local people and
deliver jobs and prosperity.”
Welcoming the news, Claire Hughes MP for Bangor Aberconwy said:
“I’m delighted that Conwy has been chosen as one of the new locations in Wales to benefitfrom the new Pride in Place Funding. When I was elected last year, I said I would bang the drum to get our communities the recognition – and funding – they deserve. And that’s exactly what I’ve done.
“In addition to this long-term funding – £20m over 10 years – Conwy CBC is also set to receive £1.5 million of capital funding to improve public spaces. Whether that goes on reopening toilets, more bins to help stop litter or revamping run-down leisure centres – I know
these are issues local residents care deeply about, and I’ll make sure they have their say on how this money is spent.”
Clwyd North MP, Gill German said:
“I am very pleased that Conwy will be receiving £21.5m as part of the UK Government’s Pride in Place programme and impact fund. Since day one of being elected, I’ve been making the case to UK Government for more money to make the most of our beautiful area. In March this year I secured £20m for Rhyl through the Plan for Neighbourhoods fund and I’m delighted to now bring another £20m+ to Conwy County.
“On top of the investments already made by the Welsh Labour Government, this funding will make Conwy an even better place to visit and work by improving our high streets, town centres and community facilities. We can choose to spend it on a wide range of different
things and all ideas are welcome. This is our chance to show what people in Conwy can do and I’ll keep making the case loud and clear for what our neighbourhoods need and make sure that community voices are at the heart of decision making.”
