I was invited by Cyngor Gwynedd to take a look at a new housing development at 137 High Street Bangor, which is about to play an important role in tackling homelessness in Gwynedd.
Thanks to a partnership between Adra, North Wales Housing and Cyngor Gwynedd, the project has transformed a derelict building on Bangor High Street into 12 modern, energy-efficient apartments.
Part-funded by Welsh Government, these units will provide people who are currently homeless with safe, secure and comfortable accommodation. The goal is to help those who are currently homeless adjust and prepare for taking on a long-term tenancy elsewhere, with specialist support provided by North Wales Housing.
Given the number of families living in temporary accommodation in our area and the immense pressure this is placing on local authority budgets – as well as the number of properties lying empty – this is a very welcome initiative and a great example of partnership in action.
Thank you to Cyngor Gwynedd CEO Dafydd Gibbard, Leader Nia Jeffreys, the management and staff at Adra and the Gwynedd Councillors representing Bangor wards for showing me around.
I’m looking forward to following up to find out how the new residents are getting on in the coming months.
