Claire Hughes MP Marks Armed Forces Week in Parliament

Claire Hughes MP has paid tribute to serving personnel, veterans and their families as she marked Armed Forces Week in Parliament and backed new legislation to strengthen support for the Armed Forces community.

Armed Forces Week marked in Parliament with the Speaker’s Flag Raising Ceremony in New Palace Yard.

Claire joined colleagues at the Armed Forces Day Flag Raising Ceremony organised by the Speaker of the House of Commons, as Parliament marked the contribution and sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces and their families.

During the week, Claire also met with Help for Heroes to hear more about the charity’s work supporting veterans and their families, including the challenges faced by those adjusting to civilian life after leaving the Armed Forces.

Claire Hughes MP said:

“Our Armed Forces make extraordinary sacrifices to keep us all safe, and they deserve the proud gratitude and support of a nation that values their service.

“It was a real privilege and honour to mark Armed Forces Week in Parliament and to meet with Help for Heroes to hear more about the important work they do supporting veterans and their families.

“Whether deployed, supporting from home or inspiring the next generation, we owe our Armed Forces community a huge debt of thanks. From the bottom of my heart: diolch.”

Claire also supported the Armed Forces Bill at its third reading in the House of Commons.

The legislation will extend the Armed Forces Covenant to every area, with the aim of improving support for tens of thousands of serving personnel and veterans.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a commitment to ensure that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly and do not face disadvantage as a result of their service.

Claire added:

“I was proud to support the Armed Forces Bill at its third reading. Strengthening the Armed Forces Covenant will help make sure that the respect and gratitude we show to those who serve is backed up by meaningful support.

“I know this is something many people across Bangor Aberconwy care deeply about, and I will continue to support our serving personnel, veterans and their families.”
