Commuters and Families in Bangor Aberconwy set to save cash on New Year Return to Work

Claire Hughes, Labour MP for Bangor Aberconwy, has welcomed the Labour Government’s freeze on rail fares, which means local commuters and families are saving much-needed cash as they make their New Year return to work. Labour’s fares freeze is the first of its kind in 30 years.

This step will save commuters hundreds of pounds on some of the busiest routes in the country, after decades of spiralling fares under the Conservatives.

Claire Hughes MP said:

“This historic freeze will give much-needed support for families across Bangor Aberconwy. Labour understands the cost pressures working people are facing at the moment. That’s why we’re determined to continue easing the cost of living so people can keep more of their hard-earned cash.”

Heidi Alexander, Labour’s Transport Secretary, said:

“We all want to see cheaper rail travel, so we’ve frozen fares to help millions of passengers save money. This is going to keep costs down for working people and help ease pressure on the cost of living as they head back to work for the New Year.

“Commuters on more expensive routes will save more than £300 per year, meaning they keep more of their hard-earned cash.

“This is part of our wider plans to rebuild Great British Railways the public can be proud of and rely on.”

Labour’s wider plan for Britain’s railways includes establishing a new publicly-owned company called “Great British Railways”, that will run and manage the tracks and trains used every day – ending years of fragmentation, driving up standards for passengers, and making journey easier and better value for money.

GBR will be accountable to passengers and taxpayers, bringing fares and ticketing into the 21st century, including through a new GBR website and app and building on the expansion of successful Pay As You Go and fares trials across the country.”
